Help Shape the Future of the Riverway Recreation Area

Why are we consulting?

Ammanford Town Council is committed to ensuring that local residents, park users and the wider community have the opportunity to help shape the future of the Riverway recreation area.

The Riverway Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) was originally installed to provide opportunities for sport and recreation and has been maintained by Ammanford Town Council for a number of years. Many children, young people and families have enjoyed using the facility and it continues to provide an important recreational space for some members of the community. A MUGA is an enclosed hard-surface or sports-surface area designed for a range of ball games and other recreational activities.

Over recent years the Council has also received comments and complaints from residents living close to the MUGA. These include concerns relating to anti-social behaviour, excessive noise, vandalism, littering, parking issues, damage to neighbouring properties and the impact these issues have had on the wellbeing and enjoyment of nearby residents. There has also been regular police involvement in responding to incidents and concerns associated with the area. The Council has experienced increasing maintenance and repair costs associated with the facility.

The Riverway area is also home to many elderly and disabled residents. The Council recognises that persistent noise, anti-social behaviour, vandalism and concerns about safety can have a particular impact on residents who may spend more time at home, have mobility or health-related access needs, or may feel less able to avoid or respond to disturbances. It is therefore important that the consultation reflects the needs and experiences of these residents as well as those of children, young people, families and other park users.

Vandalism in the wider Riverway recreation area previously resulted in the children’s play park being closed for more than five years. This history forms part of the Council’s consideration of how the area can be made safe, welcoming, sustainable and enjoyable for the whole community in the future.

At the same time, many residents have expressed concerns that removing or significantly changing the MUGA could reduce opportunities for children and young people to be active and enjoy outdoor recreation.

The Council recognises there are a range of views within the community. No decision has been made regarding the future of the Riverway MUGA. The purpose of this consultation is to understand how the facility is currently used, gather evidence from residents and park users, and seek views on a range of possible options before any future decision is taken.

Your responses will help the Council understand what matters most to the community and will be carefully considered before any future decisions are made.
